Askar Mamin instructs to complete construction of BAKAD by the end of 2022

As part of his working trip to Almaty, Prime Minister Askar Mamin inspected the construction of the Big Almaty Ring Road (BAKAD) on July 1, 2021.

BAKAD is the largest public-private partnership road infrastructure project in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The cost of construction and installation work is 150 billion tenge. The project is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Eurasian Development Bank.

The concession agreement was signed in 2018 for a period of 20 years. The concessionaire is BAKAD Investments and Operations LLP, established by the Turkish and South Korean companies Alsim Alarko, Makyol Inshaat, SK Ecoplant, and Korea Expressway.

The large ring road around Almaty with a length of 66 km and six-lane traffic will correspond to the parameters of the I technical category. Along with the construction of the road, it is planned to build new bridges, transport interchanges and flyovers.

The implementation of the project will improve the quality of transport services, ensure road safety, and reduce the negative impact of road transport on the environment. With the commissioning of the BAKAD, the entire transit flow — about 38 thousand vehicles per day will bypass the city of Almaty. At the same time, an increase in the volume of freight traffic between China and Europe is expected.

The construction site employs about 1,600 people and 600 pieces of equipment. It is planned to attract about 3 thousand people at the peak of construction.

The Head of Government instructed to increase the pace of construction and installation work and complete them by the end of 2022, ensuring all quality standards and ahead of schedule by 2 years.

“The construction of the BAKAD is important for the development of not only the Almaty agglomeration, but also the transit and transport potential of the entire country,” Mamin said.
