Kazakh-Russian plant for 1,200 new jobs to be built in Zhambyl region

July 21, 2020, Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of the Russian Federation signed an intergovernmental agreement on the implementation of the project "Construction and Operation of a Plant for the Production of Mineral Fertilizers" in Moscow, where the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Russia Ermek Kosherbayev and Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov signed an Agreement on the implementation of the project OJSC Mineral and Chemical Company EuroChem for the construction and operation of a plant for the production of mineral fertilizers in the Zhambyl region.

The project involves the development of deposits of the Karatau phosphorite basin in the south of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the construction of a new plant for the production of mineral fertilizers and industrial products with a capacity of up to 1 million tons. The investments to date has amounted to about $270 million, approximately $800 million is to be invested.

“The work of the chemical enterprise will provide an opportunity to create at least 1,200 new jobs in the Zhambyl region, and will also give a tangible impetus to the development of the manufacturing industry and agriculture, will contribute to improving food security, the socio-economic development of the Zhambyl region, increasing the export potential of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will significantly strengthen integration business ties between Kazakhstan and Russia” Ermek Kosherbayev commented.

To date, EuroChem has successfully completed the first stage of the project — to explore and start developing a phosphorite deposit, to commission a mining complex with an annual production capacity of 640,000 tons of phosphate rock.

Based on the signed Agreement, it will be possible to move to the implementation of the second stage of the project — the expansion of the existing production and the beginning of the construction of a plant next year using the best available technologies in the chemical industry.
